ZamPen celebrates world environment day with thousand volunteers

PAGADIAN CITY, June 9 (PIA) - Around 1,492 volunteers responded to the call of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Zamboanga Peninsula to participate in the simultaneous national clean up and tree planting activities held on June 5 to celebrate the World Environment Day.

The activity was in line with the efforts of the government to #BeatPlasticPollution which will result to a plastic-free rivers, creeks, esteros and seas.

A total of 2.537 tons of plastic wastes composed of plastic wrappers, PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles, sachets, Styrofoam, cigarette butts, diapers, plastic bags, straws, sanitary napkins and other plastic wastes were collected by the volunteers in 34 identified clean-up sites.

Meanwhile, approximately 3,400 seedlings composed of fruit trees, bamboo and indigenous forest tree species were planted along four mining tenements within the region.

Forming part in the series of activities by DENR-9 to celebrate the month of June as Philippine Environment Month with this year’s theme: “No to Waste: Advancing Circular Economy to #BeatPlasticPollution”, the egency hopes to generate awareness on the present state of the environment and to demonstrate that the success in addressing plastic pollution in the country can only be attained through a concerted effort of the different stakeholders.

The volunteers who converged in assigned clean-up sites throughout Zamboanga Peninsula and did their share in collecting plastic wastes along esteros, creeks, rivers and coastal areas are from the DENR-9 personnel, law enforcement agencies, local government units, community residents, people’s organizations, Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Air Force, Philippine Coast Guard, religious groups, youth, and other cause-oriented groups.
