Army participate in info drive on RA 11939, MUP Pension Reform

QUEZON CITY, (PIA)-- Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner Jr. and thousands of Philippine Army personnel participated in the information drive of the national government on the recent implementation of Republic Act 11939 and its position about the Military and Uniformed Personnel (MUP) pension reform on June 9, 2023 at the Philippine Army Officers’ Clubhouse, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

During the discussion, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, J1, Brig. Gen. Rommel P. Roldan shared updates on the RA 11939 which tackles the AFP’s policies and guidelines for occupying top positions in the military as well as the promotion, career progression, and retirement of military officers and enlisted personnel.

RA 11939 was recently enacted during the second quarter of 2023 to strengthen professionalism and promote the continuity of policies and modernization initiatives in the AFP by prescribing a fixed tour of duty for key AFP leaders.

Key representatives from the Bureau of Treasury, Department of Finance, Department of National Defense, Presidential Legislative Liaison Office, and Presidential Assistant to the Senate deliberated the AFP’s position on the reform of the MUP pension structure which will eventually become unsustainable because of the rising unfunded liabilities of the current system.

The Army personnel also participated during the exchange of talks and recommended certain actions for the modification of the pension scheme.

Moreover, Lt. Gen. Brawner conveyed his active cooperation to provide a concrete and collective official stance regarding the proposed revisions of the MUP.

“Sa ngalan ng ating Hukbong Katihan, makakaasa po kayo na ang aming prayoridad ngayon ay makapagbigay ng magandang kinabukasan para sa ating mga kasundaluhan at patuloy kaming makikipag-ugnayan sa lahat ng ahensya ng ating gobyerno para sa kapakanan ng ating hanay,” the Army chief said.

Participants of the information drive were composed of the Philippine Army Major Unit Commanders, PA Command Group, General Staff, Personal Staff, Special Staff, Technical Staff, Functional Commands, Specialty Enablers, and PA-Wide Support and Separate Units who attended the event physically and via video-teleconferencing.
