Davao Region has the most re-registered loose firearms in two months

DAVAO CITY (PIA) -- Davao Region has the most number of re-registered loose firearms in two months, the Philippine National Police (PNP) here said.

PNP XI Regional Civil Security Unit chief Colonel Richard Verceles said they have re-registered nearly 4,000 of the total of 20,000 loose firearms since May, bringing down the number to 16,000 in June in Davao Region alone.

He observed that people tend to re-register their weapons on a weekend than on weekdays.

He added that 3,016 firearms are on the process of renewal while 847 firearms have been approved so far.

“Our data has reached  25.41% surpassing the 12% target set for every region by our commanding officer, Brig. General Benjamin Silo, Jr.,” he said.

Verceles  is optimistic that the police on the ground will continue to implement the revitalized "Katok" to inform the people the need for the firearm registration, at least three times, prior to the filing of a case of illegal possession of firearms to registrants.

He said with this development, they are certain that the police will contribute to the orderly and peaceful barangay elections in October.

Verceles said that they have initially set the 50% reduction of loose firearms during the incumbency of General Silo.

He noted that the result of the loose firearm-accounting in Davao Region is encouraging with the 25.41 % mark in just two months where they brought in the regulatory services of the police to the SM Mall of Matina, Digos City, Tagum City and in Kiblawan, Davao del Sur.

He pointed out that the police use the soft-hand approach in convincing registrants of firearms to have their weapons registered.

“We issue three notices for the firearm registrant to be informed that his license has expired.   After the issuance of three notices, and the firearm registrant does not do anything, that will be the time when the police do harsher approach by applying for a search warrant and the arrest of the firearm holder,” he said.

Verceles also said that previously Davao Region used to be number 11 in the list of unregistered firearms, unlike  now that it is number one in terms of firearms that are re-registered. (JSGD/Davao Del Sur)
