NHCP turns over official historical marker for Jose Rizal monument

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) - - The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) bestows an official marker for the Jose Rizal monument located at the center of the Rizal Park in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan today on the national hero’s 162nd birthday.

The NHCP marker was ceremonially unveiled by NHCP OIC-Executive Director Carminda R. Arevalo, Cagayan Museum, Cagayan Governor Manuel N. Mamba, and Cagayan Historical Research Center Curator Niño Kevin D. Baclig.

The said heritage structure is among the country’s oldest monuments dedicated to Jose Rizal, which was erected in 1918 by then Cagayan Governor Don Honorio Lasam, a classmate of Rizal in the Ateneo Municipal de Manila.

According to Baclig, the monument, now exhibiting an official NHCP marker, serves as both a reminder of Rizal’s sacrifice, and a challenge to extend recognition and awareness to all forms of cultural and historical heritage.

Arevalo, on the other hand, expressed her gratitude to the province on behalf of the NHCP, for being one in the advocacy of promoting heritage conservation and patriotism, and remembering Rizal's heroism.

Governor Mamba, in his speech, encouraged all Cagayanos to be like Rizal in their love of country, wake up their underlying heroism, and inspire the youth to stay and help build Cagayan for the better.

Cagayan Governor Manuel N. Mamba signs the documents turning over the historical marker from the NHCP to the people of Cagayan.

Cagayan Provincial Tourism Officer Jennifer Junio-Baquiran, stated that the monument, now recognized by the NHCP, will help boost tourism in the province, particularly in the so-called heritage tour circuits. (OTB/JKC/PIA-2)
