Oro gov't widens scope of scholarship programs

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (PIA)--The local chief executive here announced the offering of medical and law scholarships to Kagay-anons youth to respond to the emerging need for medical and law professionals in the city.

Mayor Rolando "Klarex" Uy disclosed this in his State of the City Address, which he delivered at the city convention center, June 15.

The medical scholarship program (MSP) aims to provide homegrown personnel to LGU-run hospitals. Its graduates are expected to provide quality medical care to underserved and marginalized sectors of the city.

Graduates of the Law Scholarship Program (LSP), on the other hand, are to provide legal assistance to the underprivileged residents of Cagayan de Oro and will dedicate several years of service to the City Government by providing legal aid and legal education in the communities.

The mayor said they will allot 10 scholars for each program.

MSP covers actual tuition, matriculation, and book allowances, including living allowances and other-related fees, during the scholars' internship.

LSP covers actual tuition, matriculation, books allowance, and other fees, including financial assistance during BAR exam preparations.

Uy is proud that, currently, only the city of Cagayan de Oro offers a medical and law scholarship program.

In a related development, Uy also announced the groundbreaking ceremony of a city college in Barangay Dansolihon on land donated by the Higaonon tribe.

This, he said, will cater to students in hinterland barangays who did not qualify for the city scholarship program and experience financial challenges to continue to college. (APB/PIA-10)
