Davao City LGBT coalition pushes for the anti-discrimination ordinance’s IRR

DAVAO CITY (PIA) - - The “Pride and Loud” March to be held on Saturday, June 24, at Roxas Ave. in Davao City, is expected to take up the importance of the crafting of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of the Anti-Discrimination Ordinance of the city.

LGBTQ Davao City Coalition, Inc. representative Oscar Obenza Jr. said that they have been pushing for the IRR since 2015, utilizing different approaches together with the different sectors.

On the 8th year celebration of the Pride Month in Davao City, Obenza said they want to bring up and lobby again for the Anti-Discrimination Ordinance’s IRR to be in place.

“Through this pride festival, we are opening the doors once again to ask the community to start convening for the IRR. The LGBTQIA community are in full force to unify with other sectors,” Obenza said during Monday’s Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao.

He added that the city government of Davao has supported the LGBTQIA++ community regarding the provisions under the Ordinance.

The Anti-Discrimination Ordinance of Davao City “declares as unlawful the acts and conduct of discrimination based on sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, color, descent, national or ethnic origin, and religious affiliation or beliefs.”

Obenza said that the month-long celebration of Pride Month, which features activities such as series of sports fests, several social media activities, and a podcast that tackles the struggles among the LGBTQIA++ community, has gained the full support from outside allies.

The “Pride and Loud” March and Drag Queens Battle will highlight the culmination on June 24 with starting point at Roxas Ave. to Rizal Park where the program will be held.

Obenza shared that there are 97 communities from the different barangays in Davao City under the umbrella of the LGBT DCC with a total of 8,331 members. (ITL/REC, Interns/PIA-XI)
