MCDA bares achievements, 45th NDPR Week plans

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) -- The Municipal Council on Disability Affairs (MCDA) of this capital town recently convened to discuss its achievements over the past months and plans for the upcoming National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week this July.

Members of the MCDA from both the municipal government and national government agencies (NGAs) presented their accomplishments in promoting and securing the rights and welfare of Persons with Disability (PWD).

For her part, Amie Dava from the municipal Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO) said that, from January to June 2023, registered members of the PWD sector received different services, such as employment from PDAO through the Government Internship Program (GIP), Special Program for Employment of Students, and Cash for Work program.

Other services include livelihood assistance, distribution of assistive devices like wheelchairs and canes, school supplies to grade school pupils, and physical therapy and learning sessions to children with disabilities and stroke patients.

PDAO also assisted in the assessment, casting, and measurement of prosthetic and orthotic devices for some 13 persons

with disability and the distribution of cash relief assistance to 325 persons with disability from Senator Christopher “Bong” Go.

MCDA Chair and San Jose town Mayor Elmer Untaran said that his administration, through the municipal Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO), is in full support of the endeavors of the council in creating a more inclusive society for all members of the PWD sector.

Acknowledging the right of persons with disability in accessing education for self-development, Mayor Untaran said that some 30 collegiate scholarship slots courtesy of AnaKalusugan Partylist will be solely allocated for the said sector.

Meanwhile, NGAs such as the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and the Department of Education (DepEd) continue to develop programs and policies that promote accessibility and inclusivity, thereafter upholding the rights and welfare of persons with disability.

These efforts are in consonance with the theme of the 45th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week – “Persons with Disabilities Accessibility and Rights: Towards a Sustainable Future where No One is Left Behind.”

In Antique, some of the activities proposed for the NDPR Week celebration

on July 17-23 are the convergence of services for members of the PWD sector, coastal clean-up, fellowship events, awarding of exemplary persons with disability and partner non-government organizations (NGOs), and others.

As of the latest data, San Jose de Buenavista town has at least 1,472 registered persons with disability, while the province has more than 12,500, according to PDAO Antique focal person and social worker Careen Panaguiton from the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO).
