Davao Oriental Governor Malanyaon dies at 73

CITY OF MATI, Davao Oriental (PIA) - - Governor Corazon Nuñez-Malanyon passed away on Wednesday afternoon, June 29, 2023. She was 73 years old.

Vice Governor Niño Uy confirmed this through a live broadcast over the official Facebook page of the Provincial Government of Davao Oriental.

Uy said that at around 6:59 .P.M on the same day, the governor’s daughter informed them that the local chief executive died at around 3:50 P.M.

“Sa ngalan sa kagamhanang probinsiyal sa Davao Oriental, uban sa tumang kasubo nga akong ipahibalo, ang wala sa panahon nga pagpanaw sa atong pinalanggang Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon sa alas 3:50 karong hapon (In behalf of the provincial government of Davao Oriental, it is with deep sadness to inform (everyone) the untimely passing of our dear Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon at 3:50 this afternoon),” he said.

The vice governor, however, did not disclosed the cause of Malanyaon’s death.

Malanyaon is serving a fresh term as a re-elected governor of the province, a position she first held in 2007 to 2016. She started her public service as a councilor of Davao City in 1986, and later on served as a representative of the First District of the province in 2001 to 2007, and 2016 to 2022.

Gov. Malanyaon is known for her stern leadership, tourism initiatives, and government service with a heart.

Vice Governor Uy asked the public for prayers and to remember the love of Governor Malanyaon for the people of the province.

“Bisan wala na siya kanato sa pisikal, ang iyang maayong ehemplo ug pagpanerbisyo magpabilin sa atong mga kasingkasing hangtod sa kahangtoran (She may not be here with us physically, her exemplary works and service to the public will remain forever in our hearts),” Uy said.
He also asked the public for understanding and respect to the privacy of the governor’s family during this trying times. (MLU/PIA Davao Oriental)
