PCA marks 50th anniversary

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) -- The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) Antique Provincial Office joined the nationwide coconut planting activity on June 29 in celebration of its 50th founding anniversary.

PCA Provincial Head Engr. Dionelo J. Ongga said in an interview that the celebration is engaging various stakeholders to take part in the nationwide event spearheaded by no less than President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. at the Coconut Palace in Manila.

The golden anniversary carries the theme, “PCA@ 50: Achievements of the Past and Looking Forward to the Innovations of the Future.”

The PCA was created in 1973 through Presidential Decree No. 232 mandated to promote the accelerated development of the coconut and other palm oils industry.

PD 232 also provides the integration of coconut farmers so they become participants and beneficiaries of the development and growth of the coconut industry.

For Antique, the coconut planting was

done at the one-hectare farmland in Barangay Nagbangi 1, San Remigio, Antique.

Ongga noted that the planting site is owned by the University of Antique – Hamtic Campus, a staunch supporter and one of the major stakeholders of the coconut industry in the province.

The area was planted with about 143 Catigan variety coconut trees using the group of three per hill method of planting wherein the first 50 will be planted during the event.

PCA is hoping that the coconut planting will be successful, so it could produce coconut seedlings that could be used for the hybridization of local coconuts in the near future.

Ongga also cited the significant contribution of the coconut industry as being one of the pillars of the country’s economy.

The local officials including Governor Rhodora J. Cadiao, Vice Governor Edgar Denosta, Antique’s Lone District Representative Antonio Agapito B. Legarda, and Mayor Margarito Mission, Jr. of San Remigio also joined the event. (AGP/PSM/PIA Antique)
