DOST calls for college students to apply for S&T scholarships

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Region 1 is calling for all regular second-year college students who are enrolled in science and technology courses in partner schools to avail of the Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) Program.

The application for the JLSS Program for the calendar year 2023-2024 is now open.

According to Carla Grace Pacheco, Project Technical Specialist I of DOST Region 1, the JLSS aims to provide financial support to qualified and deserving students to ensure an adequate pool of science and technology human resources in the country.

Also, she noted that, “Ito ay isang scholarship program para sa lahat regardless of their socio-economic status as long as qualified po sila, kahit nagtatrabaho man ang magulang sa abroad.”

Some of the priority fields of studies are engineering, basic and applied sciences, and science and mathematics teaching.

The full list of priority courses and identified partner schools in the country are posted on the official website of DOST Science Education Institute.

Aspiring scholars must have a general weighted average of at least 83 percent or its equivalent with no conditional or failing mark from all the previous semesters.

Interested students may apply online at https://jlss.science- scholarships.ph.

The deadline for application is set on July 28, 2023.

Applicants must submit all the forms which are downloadable via the said website, along with the transcript of records, copy of birth certificate, and proof of income of parents.

After completing the application process, they will be notified through email to undergo a qualifying examination scheduled tentatively on August 26-27, 2023.

However, test centers are yet to be identified.

Scholars of said programs are entitled to a P7,000 monthly living allowance; a P10,000 per year allowance for learning materials and connectivity; a P10,000 thesis allowance; and a P1,000 graduation allowance.

And if the scholar is enrolled in private higher education institutions, the DOST will provide P40,000 cash assistance in a year for their tuition fees. (JCR/AMB/CGRC, PIA Region 1)
