Davao City Coastal Road to act as a storm surge barrier, promenade

DAVAO CITY (PIA) -- More than just a road network that aims to help alleviate the chronic traffic problems in Davao City proper, the Davao City Coastal Road will also act as a barrier to protect seaside communities during storm surges and will have spaces for parks and promenades.

“This coastal bypass road is a well-designed project not only to be a road facility but it will also serve as a coastal short protection and breakwater that will protect the city from sea wave actions, water surges, and shore erosion. Part of the project has also been designed as a promenade for the general public alongside the Davao Gulf,” Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel Bonoan said during the ceremonies marking the opening of the Bago Aplaya-Tulip Drive segment of the Davao City Coastal Road.

The Bago Aplaya Esplanade of the Davao City Coastal Road

Stretching 8.019-kilometers, the first segment connects Gulf View Subdivision in Bago Aplaya to Tulip Drive in Matina. Aside from the road network, the project also included two completed parks; the Gulf View Esplanade and the Bago Aplaya Esplanade with a combined area of 5.5 kilometers.

Two more parks are planned at the Tulip Drive section, these planned green spaces will have a total size of eight hectares. These parks will be turned over by the DPWH to the City Government for regular upkeep and maintenance.

The long-awaited opening of the segment today, July 1, was attended by the country’s top officials led by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Z. Duterte. Also present were Senator Imee Marcos, and Davao City officials which included Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte and Vice Mayor Melchor Jay Quitain Jr.

President Marcos, in his speech, also recognized that aside from being a transportation infrastructure the Davao City Coastal Road also has many uses.

“Aside from transportation, this road project also features walkways, bicycle lanes, linear parks public spaces that our people need for their comfort, happiness, and well-being… Add to that, this will also form part as a protection against storm surges. This project of the Department of Public Works and Highways is anchored in well-thought-out master plans,” the President said in his message at the opening ceremony at Tulip Drive-Times Beach.
