'Run for Resilience', casualty response simulation highlight NDRM 2023 opening in Pagadian

PAGADIAN CITY, 03 June (PIA)  - The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC)-9, through the Office of Civil Defense (OCD)-9, launched the National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) 2023 at Plaza Luz, this city.

The kick-off program aimed to foster collaboration in addressing climate change and disaster risk reduction and management. The theme for this year's NDRM was "BIDAng Pilipino: Building a Stronger Filipino Well-being towards Disaster Resilience."

The "Run for Resilience" event commence the NDRM celebration, which featured a fun run and a Zumba session.

The Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Explosive Ordinance Disposal and Canine Unit (ZDS-PECU) and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) conducted a simulation activity on mass casualty response. The participants gained practical experience and knowledge in effectively respond to various disaster scenarios, including active shooter situations, suicide bombings, hostage takings, and response to improvised explosive devices.

In his message, Regional Director Ramon Ochotorena of OCD-9 emphasized the importance of intensifying the campaign to disseminate disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) to all sectors of society, placing significant emphasis on personal health and well-being in building disaster resilience.

"Let us remember that our strength lies in our unity. Let us commit to a disaster-resilient Philippines where every Filipino is prepared, protected, and empowered," he said.

Meanwhile, Regional Director Paisal Abutazil of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG-9) stressed in his message delivered by LGOO VI Marione Paul Paner, the significance of equipping the Filipino people with the essential knowledge, skills, and strategies to confront future challenges.

He urged individuals from all walks of life to actively collaborate and establish a network of resilience throughout the nation, emphasizing, "Whether you are a community leader, a government official, a volunteer, or an ordinary citizen -- you possess the ability to make a difference."

Moreover, Pagadian City Mayor Sammy Co assured the LGU's cooperation in all mandated activities of the national government in building disaster resilience.

"Rest assured that we will always support and cooperate with the mandate of the national government to solidify our disaster resilience," he said.

The NDRM celebration aims to promote public awareness and engagement, ensuring that every Filipino is prepared, protected, and empowered in the face of disasters. (RVC/HTB/PIA9-Zamboanga del Sur)
