‘Hinun-anon’ empowers community in Iloilo town

ILOILO CITY (PIA6) -- More than 100 participants from various sectors, including barangay and municipal officials, in Tubungan, Iloilo province have been equipped with knowledge about the different programs and advocacy of some concerned government agencies as the Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-Iloilo conducted its community-based communication program dubbed "Hinun-anon", July 11, 2023.

Through the program, PIA-Iloilo was able to amplify to the community the different policies, programs, and advocacies of the government, creating a dialogue between government prime movers and the locals.

During the event, representatives from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), Department of Energy (DOE), and the Employees' Compensation Commission (ECC) discussed the different assistance programs and initiatives of their respective offices, which are all essential to the public, especially in the grassroots level.

MGB-6 Supervising Geologist Dr. Leilanie Suerte explained to the local officials the hazard situation of their town, presenting some safety and precautionary measures that they can do in case of calamities, citing that most of the villages in Tubungan, Iloilo are identified as landslide prone areas, based on the agency's recent monitoring.

ECC Regional Officer Stephen Barredo also talked about the appropriate compensation, benefits, and privileges that workers and their dependents may avail in the event of work-related contingencies such as sickness, injury, disability or death happen.

DOST- DRRM Unit Head Ryan Vilmor Dumpit, on the other hand, discussed some technologies and applications that the residents can use to monitor weather phenomenon, noting that these could be beneficial for the community in terms of disaster preparedness and response when anticipating natural disasters like typhoon.

As most of the residents are already using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking, Engr. William M. Carido, Supervising Science Research Specialist of Energy Industry Management Division – Department of Energy (DOE)-Visayas, gave the residents some safety standard tips on the use of LPG, citing the importance of LPG Industry Regulatory Act in safeguarding consumers from harmful industry practices, including illegal refilling, under-filling, as well as the sale of counterfeit LPG products.

PIA-6 Information Officer Franz Remar Garion also empowered the locals with ideas on how to combat fake news and disinformation, especially in social media, knowing that the world is gearing towards the digital age.

Meanwhile, Tubungan Mayor Roquito Tacsagon noted that PIA-Iloilo’s initiative is beneficial to the community, acknowledging the fact that having well-informed citizens also contribute to the growth of their town.

PIA-Iloilo Manager Lilibeth A. French also hoped that the knowledge gained by the attendees during the program will be echoed to other residents for them to be

aware of the different government initiatives and on how to access other programs.

Through Hinun-anon (a Hiligaynon term that means to talk about or exchange views on a subject matter), the residents have acquired better understanding of what the government is doing for them, taking advantage of the different available opportunities and benefits – which is the real essence of bringing the government closer to the people.
