Capiz choir wins in World Choir Games 2023

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) -- The Capiz State University Main Chorale (CMC) pulled off two major awards in the ongoing World Choir Games 2023 in Gangneung, South Korea.

The chorale ruled the world stage as it won the Golden Diploma (Level IV) Award for the Folklore A Capella Category of the Open Competition – Level of the WCG on July 6.

The same award was also received by the Philippine choir teams - Saguday Chorale of the Northwestern University in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, and a community- based Anima Christi Chorale from Lucena City.

CMC adviser associate professor Vivian Apuang said that the choir also won a Silver Diploma - Level 7 Award for the College/University Choir category.

Based on the WCG results, a Republic of Korea – based university choir “Ewha Chorus” got the Gold Diploma for the category under the Open Competition level.

She added that the CMC are in “high spirits” because of the awards received and in the rundown towards the closing day of the competition.

“It’s really indescribable, overwhelming and heartwarming to receive the award in a world stage representing our university and the country,” she noted, adding that participants from other countries applauded them for their feat.

“But the Filipinos in the venue are really the loudest cheerers,” she stressed.

Apuang and John Michael Lauron are the CMC conductors.

In the past years, a number of choir groups from the country like The Philippine Meistersingers, Miriam College High School (MCHS) Glee Club and Kilyawan Boys Choir won the most coveted title for the category they participated in the WCG.

Gov. Fredenil Castro and Roxas City mayor Ronnie Dadivas, through their official social media pages, were among the first to convey their felicitations to CMC and the CapSU delegation for the honor and pride they made for the city and the province.

"You are Roxas City's pride! Keep up the great work and thank you for representing our country on the world stage," Dadivas said.

The chorale performers include Ma. Jasmaien Alcayde, Ralph Ronan Avelino, Kimbie Arcangeles, Jude Banjao, John Bardovino, Denniel Basa, Harvee James Basa, Julia Francisca Cadaing, Al Mychristopher Dacles, Jean de Vicente, Jorine dela Cruz, Adrianna Gabrielle Deloterio, Danriz Ansel Eudela, Justin Fernando, Cyrine Habana, Rogue Ann Ibanez, Ma. They are also joined by the university’s Cultural Affairs director Prof. Polansky Pinky Barrientos, CapSU Roxas City Main Campus International Affairs chair Dr. Amel L. Magallanes and faculty members Prof. Romely Alcorano as well as James Olorosisimo.

The CMC was founded by the university in 1973 to develop talent and foster interests in the spirit of camaraderie, passion and love through the unifying power of choral music.

Through the years, the group has become a brand for quality performance and was named the Best Chorale Group at the 31st Annual Aliw Awards at the Manila Hotel in 2018.

The WGC or the Olympics of choir kicked off July 3 and will end today, July 13. (AGP/AAL/PIA Capiz/Photos of CMC Chorale Dispatch  from Korea)
