45th NDPR Week echoes inclusivity, PWDs empowerment

ILOILO CITY (PIA6) -- The Iloilo Provincial Government has reaffirmed its commitment for inclusivity, empowerment, and equality of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the province as part of the celebration of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week.

Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., during the program, said that the provincial government continues to improve its programs and facilities to cater the PWDs and help them live a normal life.

“We are adjusting our infrastructure, we are adjusting our facilities, and we are adjusting our lives. We want them to live a normal life and the first thing that we should do is to treat them normally,” Defensor added.

On Monday, July 17, 2023, the provincial government, through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, led the kick-off celebration of NDPR Week in the province with a theme, “Persons with Disabilities Accessibility and Rights: Towards Sustainable Future Where No One is Left Behind”.

During the event, the PSWDO distributed wheelchairs and other assistive devices donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to some PWD beneficiaries in the province.

The recipients were from the towns of Mina (5 wheelchairs); Calinog (2 wheelchairs); Pavia (4 wheelchairs, 1 pair crutches); Bingawan (4 wheelchairs); San Enrique (1 blind cane); and Santa Barbara (1 blind cane).

The PSWD also launched a three-day “one-stop-shop” event at the Capitol lobby, which was participated by different concerned government agencies to bring the services and programs of the government accessible to PWDs. The participating agencies include the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), PHILHEALTH, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO).

Other activities for the weeklong celebration, which will run until July 21, 2023, also include the giving of recognition to PWD Capitol employees, and a PWD-led blood donation activity.

Moreover, the provincial government will also hold its NDPR culminating activity on July 28, 2023, wherein they will have the “Awarding of the Search for Most PWD-Friendly and Inclusive Municipality” and the giving of recognition for PWD-scholar graduates in the province, citing that eight of them graduated cum laude, while two were magna cum laude.

Meanwhile, PSWDO PWD Focal Person Rara Ganzon said that there are already almost 28,000 PWDs in the province and noted that the celebration of NDPR Week aims to empower them as they continue to call for inclusivity and fair treatment.

“Together, let us envision a future where no one is left behind, where opportunities abound for all, and where the potential of every person is recognized and nurtured. By working hand in hand, we can build a sustainable future that echoes with the harmonious chorus of inclusivity,” Ganzon stressed. (AAL/JNH/PIA6 Iloilo)
