In a press conference on Friday, July 14, Schools Division Superintendent Susan S. Collano said that the main objective of the learning camp is to address the learning setbacks experienced by grade school students due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She aded that it will also serve as an avenue to extend professional development among teachers to enhance their teaching methodology.
The said learning camp will focus on English, Science and Mathematics subjects for Grades 7 and 8. However, any student who wish to volunteer and is interested to join, may register and participate in the five-week learning classes.
Collano explained that the 2023 NLC is just in its first phase in the implementation of the MATATAG framework.
Unlike the common public perception on summer classes, Collano said that this year’s learning camp, which is funded by DepEd is more than just usual classroom interaction. It is designed with fun-filled activities that are engaging to the students.
The NLC is categorized into three categories: Enhancement Camp for those who want to study and learn advanced knowledge and skills; Consolidation Camp for those who want to further skills and hone concepts; and Intervention Camp for those who struggle with grades and hardly meet educational standards.
The MATATAG framework is a basic education development plan created by the department. It is a term coined to make the curriculum relevant to produce job-ready, active and responsible citizens. It also aims to take steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education services and provision of facilities and take good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment.
