PAIFCB cites accomplishments vs illegal fishing

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) -- The Provincial Anti-Illegal Fishing Coordinating Board (PAIFCB) recently discussed the accomplishments and ways forward in ensuring safe and non-destructive fishing practices.

In his message, Provincial Agriculturist Nicolasito Calawag acknowledged the contributions of the member agencies in coastal law enforcement, particularly in the conservation, regulation, and protection of the province’s aquatic resources.

As of June 2023, the Philippine National Police-Maritime Group (PNP-MG) stationed in Culasi town reported the apprehension of at least 10 motor bancas involved in illegal fishing activities in the seawaters of the province.

PNP-MG reiterated that they are relentless in performing operational campaigns in upholding environmental and other relevant laws, such as Republic Act (R.A.) No. 10654 on Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing, R.A. No. 9147 or the Wildlife Violations, and R.A. No. 10591 or Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunitions Regulation.

Meanwhile, from January 1 to July 9, 2023, the Antique Police Provincial Office (APPO) conducted 54 anti-illegal fishing operations which resulted in the arrest of

238 individuals and confiscation of almost P25 million worth of fish and paraphernalia.

The Coast Guard Station in Antique also holds coastal security patrol operations covering 307.45 kilometers of coastline and seaborne patrol operations over 19,842.05 square kilometers of water area to deter attempts in illegal fishing.

To advocate compliance with regulations of commercial fishing vessels (CFV) and assist owners in the registration of their seacrafts, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) was able to inspect 278 CFVs and 7 berthing or docking sites as of June 2023.

Acknowledging the importance of educating the public about the disadvantages of illegal fishing methods and the threats it poses to both human and marine life, the Provincial Bantay-Dagat Task Force (PBDTF) continues with its information, education, and communication (IEC) campaign in coastal communities.

For his part, former Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) member and now Provincial Agriculture Consultant Fernando Corvera stressed the importance of strong collaboration and partnership among the member agencies in putting an end to illegal fishing practices in the province.

Corvera also urged the Antiqueños, especially the fisherfolk, to take part in the initiatives of the PAIFCB and PBDTF in protecting aquatic resources from all forms of illegal fishing, as he warned violators of the consequences stipulated in standing laws and provincial ordinances.
