Ifugao-PHO to honor regular blood donors

LAGAWE, Ifugao (PIA)—The Ifugao Provincial Health Office (PHO) is set to honor blood donors in the province who have regularly and voluntarily donated blood at least eight times or more  on July 27  at the Provincial Capito here.

A blood donation drive will also be conducted simultaneously with the awards ceremony in observance of National Blood Donors Month.

This commendation known as the "Blood Galloner Award " symbolizes gratitude and admiration for those who have consistently given the gift of life through blood donation. By recognizing their noble efforts, the PHO hopes to inspire others to follow in their footsteps and contribute to the welfare of the community.

Donating blood helps reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol and lipid levels, as well as decreasing the incidence of heart attacks and strokes among donors.

According to Unilab, blood donation can reduce the probability of having a heart attack by up to 88 percent. Aspiring donors will also get a free health checkup as they will be undergoing blood screening before they are cleared to donate.

Pukayon and Culhi also shared some reminders for potential donors. Interested individuals must weigh at least 50 kilograms and be in good physical health. They need to be well-rested and hydrated.

Adults aged 18 to 65 years old who are in good health are eligible to donate blood. Minors aged 16-17 can also donate blood but must secure their parent’s or guardian’s consent.

The Philippine Red Cross clarified that individuals with tattoos or body piercings are still eligible to donate blood if the procedures were done a year ago. The same applies to individuals who have undergone acupuncture or other procedures involving needles.

A healthy individual may donate every three months,  according to  the PRC.

The month of July  is designated as National Blood Donors Month by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 1021 issued on July 9, 1997. This aims to raise public consciousness regarding the crucial requirement for high-quality and safe blood, express gratitude and admiration towards blood donors, and promote the regular act of blood donation.
