DSWD Ilocos ready to aid population affected by ST Egay

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – The Department of Social Welfare and Development-Field Office 1 (DSWD-FO1) is ready to aid the population affected by the onslaught of Super Typhoon (ST) Egay in the Ilocos Region.

DSWD FO1 had all its resources prepositioned and ready for deployment if affected local government units (LGUs) requested augmentation for the provision of relief assistance to typhoon victims in their respective localities.

As of 9:00 a.m. of July 26, on stockpile across DSWD’s 20 regional and satellite warehouses are 86,520 family food packs; 29,390 non-food items; and 1,451 pieces of six-liter bottled drinking water.

Each family food pack contains six kilos of rice, five sachets of instant coffee, five sachets of cereals, and 10 canned goods which can sustain a family with five members in two days.

The non-food items include tents, sleeping kits, family kits, hygiene kits, kitchen kits, and laminated sacks.

DSWD FO1 noted some 2,417 families or 11,337 individuals affected by ST Egay as of 9:00 a.m. of Tuesday.

Of which, 208 families or 622 persons inside evacuation centers were already served with assistance by concerned LGUs while 12 families or 40 individuals outside evacuation sites were as well provided with necessary aid.

As of this writing, only LGU-Narvacan, Ilocos Sur had asked for augmentation and DSWD is already in the process of facilitating the request.

Meanwhile, members of the Response Cluster of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) Ilocos convened on Wednesday morning.

Discussed during the meeting were the on-ground status across the provinces and the response actions taken by the LGUs and concerned member agencies.

Vice Chairperson and DSWD Ilocos regional director Marie Angela Gopalan, who presided over the meeting, said it is vital to know the status of all national roads and major bridges in the region as it takes a significant factor in the delivery of supplies.

“Kailangan natin malaman ang lagay ng mga kalsada at tulay dahil ang typical na problema natin ngayon ay ‘yong mga road obstructions and clearing operations,” Gopalan said.

She added, “We want to ensure the smooth facilitation and delivery of services to our LGUs needing food and non-food assistance.” (JCR/AMB/CGRC, PIA Region 1)
