Typhoon 'Egay' affects 36 towns in CagVal

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) - - Super typhoon 'Egay' has affected 36 municipalities in Cagayan Valley Region as it passed by the vicinity of northern Cagayan and the Calayan Group of Islands.

Based on the latest report of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) Region 2, there were 2,981 families with 9, 566 individuals affected. 

Jaye M. Cabauatan, officer-in-charge of the Office of the Civil Defense, said there are 97 evacuation centers opened with 2,270 families and 7,261 individuals. 

"Aside from those who were brought to the evacuation areas, there were also 729 families with 2,320 individuals who stayed with their families and friends. Our Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council members in the affected municipalities are now roaming around to distribute relief goods and assess the situation of the affected families," Cabauatan said. 

The communication lines in Calayan Group of Island, where the typhoon passed through, were already down since this morning, while mainland Cagayan experienced intermittent telecommunication signals. 

The majority of the towns in Cagayan province are now experiencing a power outage.

Francisca Obispo, general manager of the Cagayan Electric Cooperative I, said they are now assessing the damages caused by the strong winds of the typhoon on their electric distribution lines. 

"We are trying to bring back the electricity supply in all areas that are now suffering from power interruptions. We further request our member-consumers not to hold or not to fix the damaged lines, instead, inform us so that we will fix them immediately," said Obispo. 


With the effects of the typhoon, classes at all levels and work in government remain suspended. The Department of Agriculture Region 2 technical officials are now on the field to assess the damages brought by the typhoon.
