QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -- Newly-appointed chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) General Romeo Brawner, Jr. cited the development of capabilities in cyber warfare as a significant part of the continuing modernization in the AFP.
During the 2023 Post-SONA Discussion on Good Governance, Peace and Security on Wednesday, July 26, General Brawner shared the AFP plans to develop capability for cyber warfare.
“This is one capability where we could excel in the Armed Forces of the Philippines and we could be at par with even the modern countries,” said Brawner.
Apart from developing AFP’s capabilities in cyber defense, the AFP chief of staff thanked President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. for supporting the AFP.
“We are very fortunate that our President is very supportive of our modernization efforts.”
He also shared the modernization of equipment in the military including the procurement of black hawk helicopters, frigates, close air support aircraft, air defense surveillance radars, and drones, among others.
Brawner also mentioned the need to continuously train its personnel to cope with the demands of regional threats and to ensure that AFP personnel will be able to use modern equipment properly.
“Kailangan po nating alagaan din itong mga modern equipment, we have to sustain them properly.”
In his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July 24, Pres. Marcos, Jr. said that the administration continues to strengthen and modernize the AFP and the Philippine National Police to ensure that the country remains more effective in maintaining peace and order and capable of defending our sovereignty.
