Davao City eyed as Halal hub in Mindanao

DAVAO CITY (PIA) -- Davao City is being proposed to become a Halal hub in Mindanao, said Regional Halal Committee Vice Chairperson Marilou Ampuan.

Ampuan noted that Halal practices have been existing in the city, and in fact, Davao City is the only city that has Halal ordinances, which are being benchmarked by several neighboring regions in Mindanao.

The proposal of making Davao City a Halal hub has gained support among committee members, she said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw episode at SM City Davao on Monday, July 24.

She added that there have been several Halal-certified kitchens in the city, such as the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) and the newly certified Halal academic-based culinary kitchen – the Institute of International Culinary and Hospitality Entrepreneurship (IChef).

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) XI also developed a Halal laboratory in the city.

Ampuan also said that the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) XI also proposed for the creation of the Regional Halal Council, saying “para ‘yung national program under RA10817 (Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Act of 2016) ma-cascade from regional down to local.”

She said the Halal industry has been experiencing a boom in the global economy, reaching 7.2 trillion dollars, noting “dako kaayu ang opportunity nato sa Halal industry,” the reason why they have been regularly conducting activities promoting Halal trade and tourism in the city, such as the recently concluded Philippine Halal Trade and Tourism Expo.

Aside from Halal promotion, they also strengthen their awareness campaign on Halal and the significance and benefits of adopting Halal products among the local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

“Gi-push gyud nato na if possible masabtan sa atong industry players unsa ning Halal ug kinsa ang mo-benefit ug unsa ang kaayuhan niini na atong ma-ani,” she explained.

Meanwhile, Ampuan said that they are also consistently promoting Davao City as a Muslim-friendly destination, noting that the city has been accepting Muslim tourists, following the opening of direct flights from Qatar and Singapore.

She said “Naa ta’y restaurant, accommodation nga gi-showcase na karon as Muslim-friendly destination because it’s pork-free na and the accommodation is Muslim-friendly kay naa na sila'y Kiblah, naa na sila'y specific room para sa Muslim tourist, separate na ‘yung prayer rooms allotted for men and women.”

Kiblah or Qibla refers to the direction toward the Kaaba in the Sacred Mosque in Mecca that Muslims face when engaged in ritual prayer.

She added that the number of Muslim-friendly restaurants and accommodations in the city is increasing as well.

At present, there are more than 30 Muslim-friendly restaurants and accommodations in Davao City. However, she said that there are various restaurants and accommodations in the city that are already Muslim-friendly but are yet to be listed.

Halal is a way of life. It is an Arabic word meaning lawful, permissible, or allowable, may it tangible or intangible, that is beneficial physically and spiritually. Recently, Halal encompasses all humankind, not just Muslims. (ASO/PIA-XI)
