'Bayanihan' spirit thrives in La Union after ST Egay

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union –– The spirit of “bayanihan” continues to live amid the devastation brought by Super Typhoon “Egay” in La Union province.

The provincial government of La Union (PGLU), led by Governor Raphaelle Veronica Ortega-David, has donated a total of 800 food packs to evacuees in Luna town.

In his message, Luna Mayor Gary Pinzon said that while they were thankful for the assistance from the government, they still needed more aid as these were not enough to meet the essential needs of his constituents.

He said, "Pero siyempre, kakayanin ng gobyerno ito kung may partisipasyon ang mga tao. Bagyo lang ito, kakayanin natin ito, marami pang pagsubok ang ating haharapin kaya let us work hand in hand, surrender everything to God."

Meanwhile, one of the evacuees extended her gratitude for the assistance given by the local government.

"Napakalaking tulong po talaga ang ibinigay ng LGU, nasisiguro ang aming kaligtasan na nandito po kami ngayon sa evacuation center lalo pa't isa na rin akong senior citizen," she said.

The Provincial Government of La Union, with various national government agencies and the local government of Luna, prepares food packs to be distributed to the evacuees of Luna town.
Some evacuees from Barangay Darigayos, Luna, La Union flock to receive food packs from the Provincial Government of La Union.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Red Cross-La Union Chapter provided hot meals, hygiene kits with health and hygiene promotion, and psycho-social support to different evacuation centers in San Fernando City, Bangar, and Luna.

Smart Communications has also extended communication services to the said towns.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 1  likewise delivered food aid and shelter kits amounting to P2,692,350.00.

Further, local authorities and emergency response teams are still urged to be on standby to respond to any potential emergencies that may arise due to inclement weather conditions. (JCR/AMB/KJCR/PIA La Union)
