CVDRRMC conducts post-Typhoon Egay survey over Babuyan Islands

CALAYAN, Cagayan (PIA) - - The Cagayan Valley Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CVDRRMC) conducted an aerial survey over Calayan, Dalupiri, and Fuga Islands off the coast of mainland Cagayan.

The said islands are some of the areas north of the province which received Typhoon Egay's full force last week.

The Office of Civil Defense - 2, led by Regional Director Leon DG. Rafael, Jr., was joined by representatives from the Cagayan Provincial DRRMO, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Agriculture, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine National Police, and the Philippine Information Agency, with the Philippine Air Force (PAF) providing the air asset.

Life goes on for Dalupiri island residents. Some of the typhoon damaged properties include roofs of houses and buildings, and banana groves.

The council also met with Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member Alfonso Llopis to discuss updates on the ground as well as the provision of additional relief to the Municipality of Calayan, which includes the islands of Calayan, Dalupiri, Babuyan Claro, and Camiguin.

Llopis said the entire island of Calayan is still lacking power and mobile connections after the typhoon.

On the other hand, he stated that roads are already cleared of hazards and residents have already started domestic repairs, especially those whose roofs were blown off by the strong typhoon winds.

The DSWD, with transportation assistance from the PAF-Tactical Operations Group - Region 2, also started the distribution of additional Family Food Packs to the Municipality of Calayan, as well as Fuga Island, which is part of the Municipality of Aparri.

Fuga Island was where Typhoon Egay primarily made landfall last July 25 to 26, 2023.

Meanwhile, according to Llopis, a body was recently found within their area of jurisdication, which was initially linked to the four PCG personnel on duty who went missing during the typhoon.

Air Force personnel load additional DSWD Family Food Packs onto a helicopter in Lallo, Cagayan, which will transport the relief goods to the Municipality of Calayan and Fuga Island.

The PCG, however, negated any suspected connections between the body and the four missing servicemen.
Search and rescue operations for the four are ongoing. (OTB/JKC/PIA Region 2)
