PNC urges families “go local, go green” for good nutrition

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) -- The Provincial Nutrition Committee urged families and local nutrition stakeholders to “go local and go green” to promote good nutrition.

In her keynote address to the families and stakeholders of nutrition in Bugasong, Antique during the nutrition month culmination program, Sangguniang Panlalawigan Mayella Mae Plameras- Ladislao   emphasized the need to promote local nutritious food and sustain the gardening programs in homes and in schools to support Antique’s vision of “Healthy Antiqueños.”

She stressed that promoting local food products (Go Local) in the fight against malnutrition will not only ensure fresh and sustainable food sources but will support the small farmers and fisherfolks as well.

Ladislao also pushed for the putting up of gardens in schools, homes, and other areas whenever possible (Go Green) so that the local communities will have easy access to vegetables when needed.

She also cited sustained gardening programs to help eliminate hidden hunger affecting mostly children.

Lack of iron, Vitamin A, and iodine are among the causes of hidden hunger, which when not properly addressed at a younger age could affect the mental, physical, and psycho-social growth of children.

Likewise, during the program, Department of Health representative Harriet Magbanua mentioned the vital role of Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) in the implementation of nutrition programs at the grassroots.

She also called for the convergence of services of all nutrition stakeholders to address food insecurity, especially among poor families and create mechanisms to ensure that nutritious food are available to all.

Meanwhile, Retired Colonel Luciano Sayo, Jr. represented Governor Rhodora Cadiao during the program and shared the commitment of the governor in giving

priority to nutrition programs with continuing support to the BNS.

For the part of the local government units of Bugasong, Sangguniang Bayan member Gerry Antoy speaking on behalf of Mayor John Lloyd Pacete, lauded the efforts of nutrition workers who are committed to performing their functions and ensuring that the nutrition programs are fully implemented and aligned to sustainable development goals.

Municipal Nutrition Action Officer Nurse Jose Marie Barcelo also affirmed the need to sustain local initiatives to promote good nutrition in line with this year’s theme, “Healthy Diet Gawing Affordable for All.”

The culmination program also featured the awarding of the Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar for the province in the person of Jenilyn D. Rosilio of Barangay Guija, Bugasong.
