NNC 6: Choose healthy food, healthier life

NEGROS OCCIDENTAL (PIA) – A National Nutrition Council 6 (NNC) official urged Filipinos to take on a healthy diet and be smart in spending for food.

During the recent 20223 Nutrition Month Regional Culminating Activity at the Bacolod City Government Center, the Officer-in-Charge for Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator of the NNC 6 Sheryl Sedantes shared ways by which Filipinos can have healthy diets that start from preparing a meal plan based on the established food guide “Pinggang Pinoy.”

She said “Pinggang Pinoy” suggests how Filipinos can cook daily meals at home with a balanced mix of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts. Choose green, leafy vegetables that are rich in protein yet inexpensive, she added.

Sedantes advised the public to select whole foods rather than buying highly processed ones.

She said meat can be replaced with other proteins such as legumes, eggs, small fish, and canned fish.

Consistent with the theme “Healthy Diet Gawing Affordable for All,” Sedantes said the government has passed a law that supports this goal like the RA 11148 or the First 1000 Days of a Child, promotion of trans fatty acid (TFA) elimination and formulation of a host of national and local nutrition plans and programs.

According to Sedantes, families can have a sustainable healthy diet if they grow their food at home.

She said unhealthy diet results in an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. It also adds to stress, tiredness and lower one’s capacity to work.

“Wrong food choices also increase the risk of dying and disability,” she said. (AAL/Lljr/PIA 6 Negros Occidental)
