City, provincial inflation rates decline in July: PSA

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan (PIA)-- The inflation in Palawan and Puerto Princesa both slowed down during the month of July, said Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) on August 11, 2023.

Palawan inflation rate decelerated to 5.4 percent from 6.9 percent in June, which is almost half of the July 2022 rate of 10.1 percent.

Chief Statistical Specialist Maria Lalaine Rodriguez said that the drop was attributed to the recovered volume of supplies of agricultural products, contributing to the commodity group of food and non-alcoholic beverages at 8 percent.

“Sa ngayon ay may supply na tayo kaya affected ang prices, medyo nagmumura siya,” Rondriguez said.

The transport commodity group also contributed to the deceleration at -6.4 percent due to off-season travels of transport by sea from July to October; followed by housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels at 1.2 percent.

The city of Puerto Princesa also slowed down in July to 2.9 percent from 4.2 percent in June. It is almost four times lower than the 9.3 percent of July 2022 rate.

The commodity groups that contributed to the deceleration are food and non-alcoholic beverages at 2.7 percent, housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels at 0.7 percent, and transport at -3.8 percent.

Rodriguez added that the impact of typhoon Egay in July on agricultural products might reflect on the computation of rates for August.

“Kung maraming nasirang mga palayan, gulayan, ang ating agricultural products, may impact yon dahil kokonti ang supply. Alam naman natin ang ating traders, mga nagbibenta ay tataasan nila yon. Tataas para makabawi man lang sila ng konti,” she explained.

The region of Mimaropa also slowed down to 5.7 percent from 7.2 in June, it is also lower than 7.1 in 2022. (RPG/ PIA MIMAROPA- Palawan)
