PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan (PIA) -- The city council expressed its solidarity in the celebration of the 400 Years of Christianity (YOC) and encouraged Christian locals of Puerto Princesa City to join the two-day culminating activities on August 24 and 25.
Councilor Nesario Awat in his privilege speech on August 14 said that it is important to recognize the historical significance of this milestone in the city of Puerto Princesa and the province of Palawan.
Awat proposes an ordinance to urge all Christians in the city to join the two-day celebration in Puerto Princesa. The support was strengthened by Councilor Luis Marcaida in a resolution wherein the city council expressed support and solidarity in the celebration.
“Naniniwala tayo na itong ika-400 na taon ng Kristiyanismo sa lungsod ng Puerto Princesa ay isang masasabi nating kasaysayan dahil ito ay magaganap sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon sa lungsod ng Puerto Princesa. Sinasabi na ang pagdiriwang ay ginagawa sa Cuyo taon-taon,” he said during the regular city council session.
Awat previously authored an ordinance naming Taft Street as Ezekiel Moreno Street in line with the 400 YOC celebration.
Atty. Herbert Dilig supported the move of Awat and Marcaida and also pushes to request City Mayor Lucilo Bayron to consider declaring a one-day local holiday for locals to participate in the culminating activities of 400 YOC.
“Maideklara na isang natatanging araw na walang pasok sa lungsod ng Puerto Princesa upang mas makilahok sa mga programa sa ating espesyal na selebrasyon,” he said.
One of the highlights of the first day is the Thanksgiving procession from the old airport to the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, to be followed by a holy mass. The 36 parishes from AVPP and 31 from AVT will join during the procession. The songs and prayers during the procession will be aired on the radio.
The second day on August 25 will be dedicated to youth gathering, the conduct of a symposium, and the lighting of 400 YOC Candles at Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex. (RPG/PIA MIMAROPA - Palawan)
