Magna Carta of Women marks 14th anniversary

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) -- The country is celebrating the 14th year anniversary of the Magna Carta of Women or Republic Act 9710 since it was passed into Law on August 14, 2009.

Senator Loren Legarda, in a press release, said that she considered the passing of the Magna Carta of Women a remarkable feat and a victory.

“Together with my colleagues, we fortified this important piece of legislation to safeguard the rights and welfare of women in our nation,” she said.

With Senator Pia Cayetano as principal sponsor and all other co-sponsors of Senate Bill 2396 and House Bill No. 4273, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo then signed the document into law after it had been approved by the 14th Congress.

The law provides for necessary mechanisms to enforce women’s rights and adopt and undertake all legal measures necessary to foster and promote equal opportunity for women to participate in and contribute to the development of the political, economic, social, and cultural realms.

The Magna Carta of Women is also in consonance with the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) an international treaty to which the Philippines has been a signatory since July 15, 1980.

Likewise, Legarda reminded the Filipinos that the passing of the Magna Carta is only the first step in a broader battle.

She emphasized that the true measure of success lies in the implementation of RA 9710, a responsibility that falls upon the entire society.

“Today as we mark fourteen years since its passage, I implore every Filipina to be steadfast in upholding their rights and relentless in fighting against gender-based discrimination and violence,” she said.

She also called for women and men to create a society that cherishes and defends the dignity and equality of all. (AGP/PSM/PIA Antique with reports from OSLL)
