SM City, BFP host first fire square roadshow in CagVal

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) - - To build fire safe and resilient communities, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Region 2 Cagayan Provincial Office, in partnership with SM, conducted first-ever fire square roadshow in the region on August 10, 2023, at SM City Tuguegarao.

The fire square roadshow also aims to educate kids, students, and teachers about the crucial role of firefighters.

The BFP National Headquarters Deputy Chief for Operation, Chief Superintendent Wilberto Rico Neil A. Kwan Tiu, also known as the prime mover of the Fire Square Road Show in the Philippines, personally graced the said activity.

"Nowadays, the role of a firefighter is not just limited to extinguishing a fire. A firefighter also conducts rescue operations and protects citizens during emergencies," he said.

For the kids to experience the firefighting profession, the BFP Cagayan installed rappelling and wall climbing in the roadshow proper.

Furthermore, to help kids overcome their fear during fire incidents, part of the roadshow is the smoke control room where kids can experience zero visibility.

Meanwhile, the trained emergency medical services team of BFP Cagayan demonstrated to kids the proper procedure of cardiopulmonary resuscitation when a victim’s heart stops beating.

Meanwhile, in an interview, the Tuguegarao City Fire Marshall Chief Inspector Jay-ar Guillano expressed his gratitude to SM Supermalls for always accommodating the activities of BFP.

“I’m so very thankful to SM Supermalls. So much appreciated talaga kasi overwhelming ang support ng SM sa mga adhikain ng BFP at patuloy silang sumusuporta sa amin. Makakaasa kayo na sa lahat ng programa ng SM malls ay willing kaming I accommodate din,” Guillano said.

Officials from the Breau of Fire Protection teach children on how to use fire extinguisher during the Fire Square Roadshow at SM City Tuguegarao.

In 2019, the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) of SM and BFP was formalized. The partnership has resulted in various programs staged in different SM Supermalls since then.

A total of more than 26,000 SM employees, agency personnel, and tenants participated in the training conducted by the BFP on Tenant Fire Safety, Fire Brigade Training, and other knowledge training in 2022 alone. (OTB/PIA Region 2)
