Over P650K provided to families of Binangonan boat disaster

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna (PIA) – Victims and families of the ill-fated MB Princess Aya that sank and claimed 27 lives last month were provided various assistance amounting to P655,000 and other intervention, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) IV-A said.

In a report, the DSWD IV-A provided P270,000 through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program, while the Rizal provincial government and Binangonan local government extended assistance amounting to P270,000 and P115,000 respectively.

The three institutions also provided intervention such as psychosocial first aid to the families of victims and survivors including the responders deployed during the search and retrieval operations.

The DSWD IV-A noted that the private sector and private individuals directly provided support to the victims’ families.

DSWD IV-A Regional Director Barry Chua recommended that assistance be given continuously to the survivors and victims’ families by the Rizal PSWDO and Binangonan MSWDO.

The Binangonan LGU has committed to identify further needs and intervention that could be given to the victims’ families including technical assistance and resource augmentation.

Based on the final report of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) IV-A, at least 27 died while 43 survived when MB Princess Aya capsized shortly after leaving the Binangonan port in Rizal last July 27. The boat capsized when it was hit by strong winds and heavy rains.

The Philippine Coast Guard said only 22 passengers were recorded in the passenger manifest, but over 70 passengers boarded the motorbanca with a capacity of 42 passengers, including the captain and two crew members. (CH/PIA-Laguna; with reports from DSWD IV-A)
