Isabela City launches citizen-responders program for disaster preparedness

ISABELA CITY, Basilan, Aug. 23 (PIA) – The local government of Isabela City de Basilan recently launched its Citizen-Responders for Emergency and Safety (CIRENS) program for disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM).


Uso Dan Salasim, CDRRMO, explained during the launching that the CIRENS program aims to provide first responders during emergency situations or as the need arises. Additionally, they will be responsible for providing alerts, updates, and information on disaster management issues in their respective communities.

The CIRENS program consists of 133 trained individuals from disaster-prone barangays underwent a series of training through the Community First Responders Training Course.

Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman expressed her appreciation for the CIRENS’ willingness to take on such an immense responsibility. She also narrated that CIRENS was formed during the rainy season when they worked together to save their communities. She further emphasized that the program aims to promote disaster preparedness and empower communities to become resilient.


Moreover, fourteen (14) barangays received disaster risk reduction and management equipment such as life vests, working gloves, head lights, life buoy rings, first aid kits, megaphones, hard hats, rain suits, and a 50-meter nylon rope. The barangays that received the equipment are Aguada, Baluno, Doña Ramona, Isabela Proper, Kumalarang, Lanote, La Piedad, Makiri, Maligue, Menzi, Sumagdang, Sunrise, Tabuk and Timpul.


To celebrate the completion of the training program, the 133 CIRENS were also awarded certificates during the launching program.

Isabeleños who witnessed the program are grateful to the city government as they considered that this program shows the local government of Isabela City’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its residents.
