ZamboSur pioneers Starlink connectivity in province-wide digital inclusion effort

ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR, 25 Aug (PIA) – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)-9 and the provincial government of Zamboanga del Sur have taken a momentous stride towards digital inclusion with the formalization of their collaboration to strengthen the Victory Free Wi-Fi initiative.

This joint effort aims to address internet accessibility challenges and narrow the digital divide within the province. The agreement was signed on August 24 at Pavilion, Provincial Government Complex in Dao, Pagadian City, highlighting the commitment of both entities to foster innovation and ensure digital inclusivity.

In a significant leap forward, the provincial government and DICT have worked hand in hand to enhance the Victory Wifi project, an integral component of the Broadband ng Masa (Free Wi-Fi for All) initiative.

The initiative's objective is to promote digital inclusivity by providing a dedicated internet bandwidth of 200mbps, thereby enhancing the project's capabilities. This milestone marks the transfer of control over Starlink broadband to 26 municipalities across Zamboanga del Sur, amplifying online connectivity in the province.

DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy shared his insights on the occasion. "It's a privilege for me to be here today to witness the turnover of some very important connectivity infrastructure. Today's occasion marks a significant stride in commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring digital inclusion across our nation," he said.

He also emphasized the collaborative spirit behind this endeavor and the impact it will have on job opportunities, connectivity, ecosystems, and global progress.

Governor Victor J. Yu also expressed his gratitude, noting, "Kining Starlink, nga gidala nilang Secretary Uy is first kita sa Zamboanga del Sur sa tanang provinces sa tibuok Pilipinas ang pinaka primero nga gitagaan ani."

(The Starlink, brought by Secretary Uy, is the first to reach us in Zamboanga del Sur among all provinces in the entire Philippines.")

He acknowledged the pivotal role of the DICT in enabling the Victory Wifi project, highlighting the support provided in mapping, installation, and tower usage. Governor Yu also stressed the importance of adapting to new technologies and digital transformation to accelerate transactions and progress.

The initiative utilizes Starlink, also known as "Low Earth Orbit Connection," a project pioneered by Elon Musk. The Starlink network, comprising 4,000 satellites orbiting Earth, contributes to enhanced connectivity. Notably, Zamboanga del Sur is the first province in the Philippines to benefit from Starlink's province-wide connectivity.

The collaboration between DICT and Zamboanga del Sur reflects a shared commitment to digital empowerment, unity, and progress. Secretary Uy concluded, "Collectively, let us continue to build effective and efficient digital ecosystems that prioritize impact and inclusivity. And when we say inclusivity, we mean meaningful inclusivity to drive progress, ignite innovation, and improve the lives of every Zambosurian."

As the province takes bold steps toward digital transformation, the formalized partnership signifies a groundbreaking achievement in the realm of digital connectivity and inclusivity. (NBE/HTB/PIA9-Zamboanga del Sur)
