DTI leads continuous monitoring of rice price cap in Oriental Mindoro

CITY OF CALAPAN, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) -- In an effort to alleviate the effects of rising food prices due to the continuous uptick of inflation rate in the country, the Philippine government through the Executive Order 39 recently implemented a price cap on rice.

The mandated price ceiling, initiated by the government, sets a maximum price of which rice can be sold to consumers. The main objective is to make rice affordable to all income groups, particularly those in the lower-income brackets who spend a large portion of their income on food. EO 39 states that regular-milled rice should be capped at P41 while well-milled rice at P45.

In a recent interview with Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Oriental Mindoro, Provincial Director Arnel Hutalla shared that as of September 13, there are 156 profiled rice retailers in the province, and out of those numbers, 54 are compliant to EO 39; meaning there is a 35% compliance rate in Oriental Mindoro.

Hutalla further stated that monitoring of prices is still continuous all throughout the public markets in the 14 municipalities and 1 component city of the province. These continuous monitoring, he said, will ensure that lists of retailers who are eligible to receive subsidies from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will be accurate. He further noted that only those who are compliant to EO 39 are eligible to avail the subsidy from the national government. The subsidy amounting to P15,000 will be distributed once everything has been put into place.

DTI Oriental Mindoro also coordinated with the Sustainable Livelihood Program Coordinators in the different municipalities of the province, and further stated that these coordinators will be the one in-charge of the lists of rice subsidy beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, some consumers expressed their opinion regarding the ongoing implementation of price cap on rice in the country. According to some of them, government officials must carefully monitor the situation to ensure that the cap does not lead to supply shortages or quality issues.

As for Randy Atienza from Tagumpay, Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, he expressed his contentment regarding the ongoing mandated price ceiling of rice in the province, “malaking bagay sa aming mga mamamayan na bumibili nito sapagkat magkakaroon kami ng mas magandang mabibili na bigas sa murang halaga, kaya approve sa akin ‘yun [EO 39].”
