QUEZON CITY, (PIA) – Simultaneous coastal cleanup activities were conducted in Navotas City following the celebration of the 2023 International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day on Saturday, September 16.

The said initiative also forms part of the local government’s sustainability programs aimed at alleviating the risks associated with environmental degradation as a city characterized by its urban coastal communities.

City Mayor John Rey Tiangco affirmed the importance of remaining committed in keeping the coastal zones clean knowing that many families rely on aquatic resources as the main source of their livelihood.

“Navotas is a coastal city, and a large portion of our population depends on fishing for their income. Keeping the sea and other bodies of water clean is imperative in helping our kababayans maintain their livelihood. Let us make cleanliness a part of our lifestyle,” said Tiangco.

“Our city is the extension of our homes. Just like how we keep our homes in order, let us do our part in maintaining the cleanliness of our communities,” the local chief executive added.

A total of 700 individuals from all the 18 barangays of the city actively participated in the cleanup activities including representatives from the city government and national government agencies, barangay, in-city schools, non-governmental organizations, as well as private sector partners.

The volunteers accomplished an Ocean Trash Data Form which was utilized to record the amount or volume of waste collected during the cleanup.

Accordingly, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) also facilitated the delivery of related information, education, and communication (IEC) campaigns pertaining to the proper solid waste management practices, particularly segregation at source.

On a national scale, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) likewise spearheaded the conduct of coastal cleanup drives in partnership with local government units and other relevant stakeholders.

Among the sites where the national environment department held cleanup activities include the Wetland Park in Parañaque, Dolomite and Baseco Beach in Manila, Pasig River, Tullahan River in Quezon City, and Tanza Marine Tree Park in Navotas City.

The 2023 ICC Day was collectively observed with the theme “Clean Seas for Healthy Fisheries: Sustainably Feed the Global Population.”

The ICC is known to be the largest volunteer work geared towards marine conservation and the creation of unified solutions to the growing debris problem of the country.

The celebration of the ICC Day every third Saturday of September was institutionalized by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 470 in 2003. (Navotas PIO/PIA-NCR)
