PNP reports decrease in overall crime rate from Jan. 1 to Sept. 15

MANILA, (PIA) -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced Saturday, September 16, remarkable progress under the leadership of the Marcos administration, in the fight against crime and criminal elements.

PNP Chief, PGen. Benjamin Acorda Jr., reported a substantial drop in the overall crime rate for the year 2023 when compared to the same period last year.

During a press forum held in Quezon City, PGen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. revealed that the PNP had recorded a noteworthy reduction in crime incidents from January 1 to September 15, 2023. Specifically, there were 11,975 fewer reported incidents during this timeframe, signifying a significant 7.874 percent decrease in the crime rate.

PGen. Acorda Jr. highlighted the successful outcomes of the campaign against illegal drugs, citing 34,496 operations conducted and the seizure of illegal drugs with an estimated value of over P7.2 billion since the beginning of the year.

"In our relentless pursuit of justice, we have made significant strides in apprehending wanted individuals. Today, through our proactive and honest law enforcement operations, we have apprehended a total of 54,653 individuals, including 56 wanted persons with rewards. Additionally, our campaign against loose firearms has resulted in the recovery and surrender of 34,404 firearms," Acorda said during the forum.

To bolster public safety and security, an intensified police presence and visibility have been established in crime-prone areas and other public convergence points. PGen. Acorda expressed his deep appreciation for the dedicated men and women of the Philippine National Police for their unwavering commitment to duty.

Acknowledging the exceptional performance of the PNP during the successful hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, he noted the commendations and accolades received from foreign guests and delegates.

Acorda also announced that the PNP had earned an impressive 85 percent trust and approval rating in surveys among government agencies, ranking among the top three, alongside the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Department of Education (DepEd).

The police chief emphasized that the majority of the more than 226,000 PNP personnel are honest and upright, dedicated to their duties.

However, he acknowledged instances of misconduct and assured that decisive actions are being taken to address them. In the period from January 1, 2022, to August 30, 2023, 4,082 cases involving PNP personnel have been resolved, resulting in appropriate penalties and disciplinary actions. As part of their integrity enhancement program, the PNP has conducted nearly 116,000 random and mandatory drug tests, swiftly dismissing any personnel found positive for drug use.

Looking ahead, the PNP is actively preparing for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections. The police force is closely monitoring 27 areas of concern and taking proactive measures to ensure a peaceful and fair electoral process.

Recognizing the vital role of the media and the public as watchdogs of truth and justice, PGen. Acorda stressed the PNP's commitment to cooperation, transparency, and accountability.
