Abra to host  Reg’l Science & Technology Week on Sept. 27-29

BAGUIO CITY(PIA)-- The Department of Science and Technology Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR) is inviting everyone to join the celebration of the Regional Science, Technology  and Innovation Week (RSTW) on September 27 to 29  in  Bangued, Abra.

The celebration carries the theme “Siyensiya, Teknolohiya at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na Kinabukasan,” with a sub-theme of “Leveraging Green, Innovative Technologies for Climate Change Adaptive Agriculture in CAR”.

DOST-CAR Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services Dr. Pita S. Picpican  said  the RSTW  is conducted annually before the nationwide celebration to increase  public appreciation of S&T, promote DOST programs and services in the countryside, and drumbeat the upcoming national celebration in November.

This is  spearheaded by the DOST-CAR in partnership with various stakeholders such as the LGUs, academe, media, regional line agencies, micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), among others.

DOST CAR Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services Dr. Pita S. Picpican shares the lined up activities of the Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Week slated on Sept. 27 to 29, 2023 in Bangued, Abra.

Activities of the RSTW include S&T Exhibits showcasing  technologies from the different DOST research institutions and partners that are ready for commercialization.

Among the exhibitors include Phivolcs, Metals Industry Research and Development Center, Industrial Technology Development Institute, Science and Technology Information Institute, Philippine Nuclear Research Institute, Philippine Council for Health Research Development, and  Philippine Textile Research Institute.

The S&T Interactive Exhibits will showcase fun, engaging, entertaining, and exciting technologies, and  a Techno Bazaar to promote products of DOST-Assisted MSMEs in the region.

There will also  be S&T Forum and Trainings  featuring  appropriate technologies including DOST programs and services for various stakeholders.

The focus of the training will  be the Abra Ikawayan; Developing Bamboo Industry for Economic Growth and Environmental Sustainability featuring the following sub-topics; Unveiling Bambo Value Chain, Explored from roots to twigs by University of the Philippines Los Banos as facilitators ; Fostering Innovations Towards Bamboo Industry by CITEM/FTRDI; Bamboo Evolution, a Climate Resilient Society to be discussed  by Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

There  will  also be  a startup caravan wherein present innovations on entrepreneurship, product orientation on Community Level Evaluation and Assessment of Rain induced Landslide Susceptibility (CLEARS) Application and Cordillera Landslide Knowledge Management Center website will be presented.

Also, a techno demo  on Digital Handloom Weaving Design, Stakeholder’s forum on Textile Value Chain of the Cordillera Region, Techno Demo on AMCEN and 3D printing, STI Escape Room, and Robotics Inno session.

DOST CAR will also  recognize  and award the  2023 Best Regional and Provincial  Small Enterprises Technology  Upgrading Program (SETUP) Adoptor para sa mga MSMEs  and Best Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Community.

 This year’s  RSTW  is in partnership with the Provincial Local Government Unit of Abra, Abra State Institute of Science and Technology, and the Municipal Local Government Unit of Bangued.  (JDP/MAWC-PIACAR)
