Isabela City launches gardening project for food security

ISABELA CITY, Basilan, Sept. 21 (PIA) -  Amidst growing concerns about food scarcity, Isabela City recently launched a gardening project that aims to promote food security in the area.

Under the guidance of Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, Isabela City launched the "Halina't Magtanim ng Prutas at Gulay" (HAPAG) project which calls for community involvement in cultivating fruits and vegetables for self-consumption and local market distribution.

During the launching program at the SP Session Hall, HAPAG Focal LGOO Arnel Alvarez presented the project's legal foundation, performance measures, and LGU responsibilities, stating that the project aims to align with the Department of Interior and Local Government's circular on food scarcity. He also highlighted the City Agriculture Office's collaboration in providing vegetable seeds and farming equipment, along with their support for the barangays involved in the initiative.

Moreover, Mayor Turabin-Hataman emphasized how crucial community participation is in addressing hunger and promoting food security. By producing their vegetables, Isabela City can lower the prices of vegetables in local markets, and the mayor emphasized this is not just an advocacy, but a belief that the city should be self-sufficient in providing for its residents.

“It’s not just an advocacy, but we truly believe that we should already be able to feed ourselves,” Mayor Turabin-Hataman emphasized.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Jhul Kifli Salliman affirmed the Sangguniang Panlungsod's legislative initiatives to support local farming and agriculture. He expressed the council's commitment in promoting community organic gardening through resolutions and ordinances, as a means of creating opportunities for farmers and advancing the industry.

After the lunching program, the mayor led the planting and harvesting activity at the Sunrise Communal Garden, inviting city residents to cultivate their fruits and vegetables to promote urban agriculture and food security.

Mayor Hataman also stressed that this project of the city government is a proactive step towards addressing the pressing issue of food security. Through encouraging community involvement and promoting self-sufficiency, they provide an inspiring example for other cities facing similar challenges. (RVC/NDR/RFN-PIA Basilan)
