DOLE to provide livelihood support to families affected by EDSA Greenways Project

MANILA, (PIA) --The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) agrees to provide livelihood support to individuals affected by the ongoing EDSA Greenways Project.

The labor department said the procurement of the livelihood projects amounting to PHP4,440,000.00 is now underway, with the awarding of the DOLE aid scheduled sometime in November 2023.

Labor Secretary Bienvenido E. Laguesma and Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista inked on September 25 a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will ensure the continued productivity and provide livelihood assistance to identified project-affected persons (PAPs) of the EDSA Greenways Project.

Led by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the EDSA Greenways Project aims to improve the pedestrian environment and to connect pedestrian networks in four identified train stations along EDSA, specifically in Balintawak, Cubao, Guadalupe, and Taft.

“The general objective of this MOU is to explore cooperative ways in relation to the Project, particularly on the provision of non-cash and/or livelihood assistance program by DOLE for the EDSA Greenways Project Affected Persons (PAPs) consistent with its role as a member of the subcommittee for livelihood restoration of Project Inter-Agency Coordinating Council (PIACC)…,” the agreement stated.

Initially, DOLE will provide the first batch of assistance to 144 PAPs residing along Quezon City, Balintawak, Makati-Guadalupe, and Pasay Rotunda.

DOLE Undersecretary for Workers Welfare and Protection Cluster Atty. Benjo Santos M. Benavidez and DOLE-NCR Senior Labor and Employment Officer and Livelihood Focal Ms. Aurora E. Halcon also witnessed the ceremonial signing.

The EDSA Greenways project involves constructing elevated walkways located at four mass transit stations, specifically the Cubao station of Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), Balintawak station of Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1, Taft station of LRT-1 and MRT-3, and Guadalupe station of MRT-3.

The EDSA Greenways project aims to provide seamless accessibility between public transportation hubs in four key areas along EDSA for pedestrians and commuters.

It’s intended to build and repair almost 5-km of covered and elevated walkways that connect to four MRT and LRT stations. The structures will feature 5-meter wide walkable lanes with elevators and security monitoring systems. (dole/pia-ncr)
