PSA Palawan kicks off National Statistics Month

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan (PIA)--The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) opened the month-long celebration of the 34th National Statistics Month, aiming to make locals realize the importance of data in decision-making and daily lives.

Chief Statistical Specialist Maria Lalaine Rodriguez said this celebration will help to increase appreciation for the importance and value of statistics across different sectors of society. After the motorcade, PSA Palawan opened Monday its exhibit of various results of surveys conducted in the province.

It includes 2022 Palay and Corn data, Poverty Statistics, Philippine Identification System, 2022 Production Data, Inflation rate in Puerto Princesa and Palawan and the Provincial Product Account.

“Our goal is to inspire the general public to collaborate in enhancing the quality and standard of statistics in our country—Even in our daily lives, we unconsciously utilize statistics,” Rodriguez said.

This year’s theme, “Accelerating Progress: Promoting Data and Statistics for Healthy Philippines” emphasized the critical role of data and statistics in the economy. Having access to reliable statistics is important for making more informed decisions, regardless of office or agency, Rodriguez added.

The exhibit at SM City Puerto Princesa aims to raise awareness among mallgoers about the data produced by PSA in Palawan. It can also help locals provide accurate data once interviewed for surveys.

Rodriguez said PSA Palawan will change the exhibit from time to time whenever a new data set is produced within the entire month of October.

“Sana ay magkaroon sila ng awareness na ang statistics ay importante. Unconsciously, hindi nila alam na they are using statistics. Nandiyan yong ilang kilo ang bibilhin kong isda, ilan ang matitira, paano ko babudget’n ang aking sweldo—those are statistics. Para malaman na ganito pala kaimportante,” she said.

Moreover, Rodriguez said PSA is now in the technical phase of working on the product accounts of Palawan and Puerto Princesa in preparation for the release of data in December. Aside from working on product accounts, PSA is also conducting an ongoing census of agriculture and fisheries until October 25. (RG/PIA Mimaropa-Palawan)
