Ilocos Norte braces for Typhoon Jenny

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte (PIA) -- The province of Ilocos Norte is now preparing for the possible effects of Typhoon Jenny, which is expected to bring heavy rains to the province until it exits the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) between Thursday morning and afternoon.

As per the latest typhoon bulletin from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) at 5:00 p.m., October 3, the whole province of Ilocos Norte is under tropical cyclone wind signal number one.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) convened the municipal and city DRRMs, some local officials, security and rescue personnel, and the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) for a Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment (PDRA) meeting to prepare for the typhoon.

During the meeting, Mayme Magayamo of the PSWDO assured that there is enough supply of relief packs, food, and non-food items ready to be distributed to affected residents.

She added that the PSWDO can distribute family food packs to fisherfolks early so they don’t risk going out to sea during the onslaught of rain.

Vice Governor Cecilia Araneta Marcos instructed the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the DRRM Officers (DRRMOs) of coastal towns to closely monitor the gale warning and sea water levels in their areas.

She also reminded the DRRMOs to prepare their generator units in case of power interruptions due to the typhoon.

She added that the provincial government is prepared to augment the towns with gasoline to be used for the power generators.

Marcell Tabije, provincial disaster risk reduction and management officer, assured that the DRRM offices in the province are in close coordination for real-time situation reports in their area.

“We also issued an advisory to our city and municipal DRRMS for the preparedness actions we recommend for them to undertake, as well as to coordinate closely to the PNP, BFP, PCG, Marines, Army, PNP, SAF, Maritime, and other operating units within their AORs so that they together very well coordinate in pre-emptive or force evacuations, search and rescue operations, and in relief operations,” he added.

Typhoon Jenny is forecasted to move northwestward or west-northwestward until tomorrow before turning generally westward thereafter.

According to the track forecast, Typhoon Jenny will make landfall over the southern portion of Taiwan between tomorrow late evening or Thursday. (JCR/AMB/EJFG, PIA Ilocos Norte)
