DSWD distributes hygiene kits to senior citizen PDLs

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Mimaropa kicked off the celebration of the Elderly Filipino Week (EFW) in Mendoza Park Puerto Princesa City, Palawan on October 1, 2023.

The Elderly Week celebration for this year revolves around the theme "Honoring the Invaluable Legacy of the Senior Citizen." This activity emphasizes the stories and contributions of our senior citizens in the development of our country.

Malacañang has issued Memorandum Circular 34 directing national government agencies and encouraging local government units to support activities and programs for senior citizens during the annual celebration of the Elderly Filipino Week.

“All [national government agencies] and instrumentalities, including GOCCS (government-owned and controlled corporations), GFIS (government financial institutions), and SUCs (state universities and colleges) are hereby directed, and all LGUs are hereby encouraged to extend full support for and cooperation with the NCSC in the conduct of relevant activities and programs for senior citizens during the annual celebration of the Elderly Filipino Week,” the memorandum states.

As part of the celebration, the Regional Social Pension Unit distributed hygiene kits to the Persons Deprived in Liberty senior citizens in Puerto Princesa District Jail and Provincial Jail Management Division.

Elderly Filipino Week is commemorated every October 1 to 7 by Proclamation No. 470, issued by then-President Fidel Ramos on September 26, 1994.

The proclamation establishes the Executive Department’s obligation, via the Department of Social Welfare and Development, to implement a social welfare program supporting the well-being of the elderly. (GATS/PIA MIMAROPA)
