MAMBAJAO, Camiguin (PIA)--Highlighting the crucial role of statistics in fostering good health, sustainable livelihoods, effective government programs, and overall societal progress, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Camiguin kicked off the 34th National Statistics Month, October 2, with the theme, "Accelerating Progress: Promoting Data and Statistics for Healthy Philippines."
According to the records of PSA Camiguin for the period of January to December 2022, there were a total of 1,036 live births, with 503 being male and 533 female. Additionally, 350 marriages were recorded, with the highest number occurring in the month of May.
The statistical data also revealed that 707 individuals passed away during the same period, with 418 males and 289 females. Notably, January 2022 saw the highest number of recorded deaths at 85.
Dr. Magnolia Naman, the provincial health officer (PHO), attended the event and provided insight into Camiguin residents' health statistics. She presented information on prevalent diseases, with acute respiratory infections, coughs, colds, or fever topping the list, affecting 1,588 individuals in 2022.
Pneumonia followed closely with 595 cases, along with various other health concerns like urinary tract infections, dental problems, bronchial issues, high blood pressure, cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, congestive heart failure, and acute gastroenteritis.
Naman explained that due to the lockdown in 2021, fewer check-ups were conducted, resulting in a smaller dataset. Reduced clinic services, including those from neighborhood municipal health offices, were the result of the restrictions.
Also, to engage participants actively, a quiz bowl was organized as part of the celebration. The quiz bowl not only tested participants' knowledge but also reinforced the importance of understanding and utilizing statistical information for informed decision-making and societal development.
The National Statistics Month celebration underscored the commitment of PSA Camiguin to advocate for the meaningful use of data in driving progress and ensuring a healthy and well-informed community. (RTP/PIA-10/Camiguin)
