DavSur farmers' coop ventures in poultry farm-based food catering business

HAGONOY, Davao del Sur (PIA) -- The newly inaugurated Davao Multi-Tier Broiler Farm, operated by San Miguel Foods, Inc., in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur, has not only provided 1,000 job opportunities for the locals but has also opened a big business venture for a farmers’ cooperative.

Doroteo Camillo, Jr., president of the ECJ Davao Farms Agrarian Reform Multi-Purpose Cooperative, expressed gratitude for their group being selected to manage the canteen and catering services for the company's employees and events.

“Dako kaayo among kalipay napilian ang Hagonoy nga natukoran sa proyekto. Labaw na sa coop nga dako kaayong ikatabang sa akong mga kauban ug sa among pamilya [We are very happy because Hagonoy was chosen to be the project site, especially for the cooperative because this would be a big help for my colleagues and for our families],” Camillo said.

Established in 2000 with 699 members, the cooperative initially operated a small retail store, or sari-sari store, until the opportunity arose to venture into a larger enterprise.

During the inauguration on Thursday, October 12, San Miguel Corporation president and CEO Ramon S. Ang proudly presented to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. the cooperative as the company’s partner in operating the world-class and climate-controlled poultry mega farm.

Ang has emphasized its engagement with the local farmers’ cooperatives as a heed to the call and vision of the President to also help the communities.

“Sinososyo natin ang local communities, para sa ganun everybody’s happy. Kasi hindi natin gusto na pupunta tayo sa isang lugar para sabihin na nagpapa yaman lang tayo, nagpatayo ng malaking negosyo at sinisira natin ang maliliit na sari-sari store or maliliit na backyard poultry or piggery. Hindi po natin gagawin yun, dahil yun ang vision ng ating mahal na pangulo [We partner with the local communities so that everybody’s happy, because we don’t want that we go to an area just to get wealthy, to build big business and ruin small sari-sari stores or small backyard poultry or piggeries],” he said.

He assured the President that they will “continuously develop and make more meaningful projects to help create jobs and minimize the reliance on imported food.”

Pres. Marcos was the guest of honor at the inauguration of the first poultry mega farm, which currently features one module of five farmhouses.

Eventually, the farm will have 28 modules with a maximum capacity of 80 million chickens harvested annually.

According to SMFI briefer, the modular concept will allow birds of different ages to be placed on the farm while protecting the health status of the younger birds by keeping them at a safe distance from older chickens. (CLC/PIA Davao)
