La Union leads mangrove planting for environmental awareness

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) — The Provincial Government of La Union, through its Provincial Statistics Committee (PSC) and with the support of the Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO) and the Local Government of Luna, spearheaded a mangrove planting activity at Sitio Cabugbugan, Barangay Pila, Luna, La Union on Oct. 13.


The tree-planting activity is part of the observance of the 34th National Statistics Month (NSM) celebration with the theme “Accelerating Progress: Promoting Data and Statistics for Healthy Philippines”.


During the activity, about 300 mangrove seedlings were planted in the Sitio Cabugbugan mangrove area. 

The initiative, which was participated by volunteers from the Provincial Health Office, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) aims to promote social relevance, environmental awareness, and sustainability among concerned agencies. 


In her message, Norcelie Jucutan of the PSC said the activity helps bring awareness to the public on the importance of preserving the bodies of water in the province.


“Totoo po na through planting of mangroves, [it] will surely preserve the ecosystem and habitats in the freshwater area,” she said.

Some personnel of the local government unit of Luna, La Union joined the mangrove planting activity as part of the celebration of the National Statistics Month at Sitio Cabugbugan, Pila, La Union on October 13.

Moreover, she said the activity was in line with the provincial government’s continuing expansion and rehabilitation of mangrove forests in the area. 


The PGLU also vows to continue mangrove planting to monitor the survival rate of the mangroves planted. (JCR/MJTAB/KJCR, PIA La Union)

The mangrove planting activity, which was participated in by various government agencies, aims to reduce soil erosion and can protect freshwater communities against flooding.
