5.9 earthquake rocks Davao de Oro

DAVAO DE ORO (PIA) -- A magnitude 5.9 earthquake shook the province of Davao de Oro early morning on October 20.

According to the Philippine Institute Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the tremor with a magnitude of 5.9 and depth of 13 kilometers took place in New Bataan town at around 2:58AM.

PHIVOLCS noted that the Intensity V was felt in New Bataan, Maragusan, and Pantukan, all in Davao de Oro; and Caraga town in Davao Oriental.

The shaking was also felt in Bukidnon, Soccsksargen, and Surigao del Sur.

As a result, Davao de Oro Governor Dorothy Montejo Gonzaga ordered the suspension of classes in all levels in both public and private schools in the province starting October 20 until lifted.

Gonzaga said in a Memorandum Order that concerned agencies would inspect and assess the structural integrity of the infrastructures in the province, including school buildings.

According to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) head Joseph Randy Loy, there were additional minor cracks at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Session Hall and Land Transportation Office; while new hairline cracks were noted at the buildings of the Commission on Elections, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, and new minor cracks at the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples.

“No new cracks were noted on the other buildings in the main capitol,” Loy said.

The earthquake also caused the detachment of a conductor in the Maco-Banaybanay 69kv line that cut off the electricity from 3:04 A.M. until 6:44 A.M.

A landslide along Tali-Langgawisan road in Maragusan occurred due to the earthquake, and its debris covered the pathway making it impassable to any type of vehicle.

As of 2:30 P.M. today, Oct. 20, the Municipal Engineering Office of the local government unit of Maragusan conducted clearing operations in the area. (MLU/PIA Davao de Oro)
