LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte (PIA) – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region I has officially turned over an “unsinkable” boat to the provincial government of Ilocos Norte on Oct. 18 during the celebration of the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week in the province.

Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc personally received the rescue equipment.

“This is one of the technologies of DOST with the Filipino Inventor Society. Maliit siya kasi this is actually designed para sa mga eskinita. Yung mga lugar na mahirap abutin ng mga rescuers at kahit anong effort na gusto ninyong patumbahin, hindi siya matutumba,” said DOST-1 Regional Director Dr. Teresita Tabaog.

The said vessel is made of buoyant materials and rigid fiberglass flexi-polymer composite which makes it impact-resistant and able to stay afloat when damaged.

With its lightweight build, it can easily be carried and transported by land, making it suitable for rapid deployment.

Through this technology from DOST, the disaster rescue and relief capabilities of the provincial government will be further boosted.

In his message, Manotoc acknowledges the technological advancements of the DOST that are helping uplift the lives of the people and the communities.

“Alam po natin ang siyensya at teknolohiya ay applicable sa lahat. Hindi lang in terms of innovating, but also in terms of livelihood. Ito po ang priority natin lahat na siguraduhin na ang bawat kakailian ay may hanapbuhay at trabaho at kasama po doon ang science and techbology,” said Manotoc.

This year’s RSTW took place in the province of Ilocos Norte wherein thousands of students from Region 1 participated and visited the technology exhibits at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena. (JCR/MJTAB PIA Ilocos Norte)
