Antique marks the observance of International Day for OEP

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA)  --  Antiqueños join the rest of the global communities in observance of the International Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty (OEP) with a program in the Municipality of Anini-y on Oct. 17.

National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) director Ronaldo Mateo, during the program, said that the observance of International Day for the Eradication of Extreme Poverty is a day of awareness, reflection, commitment, and a call to action to end poverty and exclusion.

The activity was held at the commemorative stone marker established fronting the municipal hall of Anini-y town which was unveiled by then NAPC chair Liza Masa in recognition of the town's significant gains in decreasing poverty incidence in 2017.


Mateo also emphasized the need for everyone to sustain the gains and further collaborate with each other as development stakeholders to ensure poverty alleviation programs are delivered and the fundamental rights to decent life are upheld.

He also noted that despite the stories of progress, there still persists extreme poverty and exclusion in other parts of our country and globally.

“Our gathering today is not merely symbolic. It's a testament to our collective will and renewed commitment — leaders, advocates, and the indomitable Filipino spirit -united in transforming these tales of hardship into stories of triumph,” he added.

In response, mayor Maxfil Pollicar reiterated the commitment of the Municipal Government to pursue poverty alleviation programs anchored on the needs of his constituents.

He considered food security, education, and health to be his top three priority thrusts that will be included in the preparation of the Local Poverty Reduction Action Plan.

Likewise, Pollicar cited the support of the national and provincial government poured into the town which comes in the forms of livelihood and training programs, support to local entrepreneurs, and other social amelioration programs.

He also recognized the active participation of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) instrumental in the empowerment of families.

Marilou Llavan, director of the Antique Human Development Program and NAPC Council member-NGO sector, also encouraged the local CSOs to sustain their participation in governance and called for the preparation of a Local Poverty Reduction Action Plan targeting the poorest of the poor to avail of government assistance.

Commissioner Paolo Guanco of the Presidential Commission of Urban Poor also graced the occasion and committed to working with the municipal government to ensure the implementation of the Magna Carta of the Poor.

Vice Mayor Jorrey T. Sampior and heads of offices of the Municipal Government of Anini-y also shared their respective poverty alleviation programs implemented in the different barangays of Anini-y.

Other agencies of government who graced the event and expressed solidarity with the endeavors of LGU Anini-y in eradicating extreme poverty are Provincial Social Welfare Lazaro Petinglay, Jessana Carmela N. Lariza of the Department of Interior and Local Government, Evelyn Remo of the Department of Education and a representative from the Philippine Information Agency.

The observance of the International Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty was held simultaneously in seven locations in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao - Rizal Park in Manila, Davao City, Ozamis City, Buenavista in Quezon Province, Barotac Viejo in Iloilo, Anini-y in Antique, and Ezperanza in Agusan Del Sur.

To NAPC, the commemoration sites are places filled with stories of families securing their first homes of young scholars breaking generational barriers to education, and of every Juan and Juana inching closer to a life that is stable, comfortable, and secure — isang matatag, maginhawa, at panatag na buhay.

The commemoration of the National Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty and Hunger is anchored on the theme, "Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting Dignity into Practice for All. " (AGP/PSM/PIA Antique)
