QUEZON CITY (PIA) -- National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief, PMGEN Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., has commended the overall peaceful and safe New Year celebrations across the region. He personally oversaw key areas where people gathered, like bus terminals and train stations, ensuring police presence and order.

Increased police visibility played a crucial role in minimizing crimes during the holidays, particularly by enforcing bans on firecrackers and illegal firearm discharge.

These positive accomplishments could be credited to our security preparations and consistent implementation of various measures and campaigns,” Nartatez said.

As of January 1, 2024, authorities arrested violators, confiscated illegal firecrackers worth over P670,000 and are addressing incidents of stray bullets causing injuries.

Despite some regrettable incidents involving illegal firearm discharge, including a case where a six-year-old was injured, Nartatez emphasized ongoing investigations to hold accountable those responsible.

The NCRPO recorded 234 firecracker-related injuries but awaits validated reports from the Department of Health for precise figures. Additionally, police efforts were concentrated at designated New Year countdown areas, ensuring a crowd of around 168,000 celebrated safely.

Nartatez praised local government leaders for organizing common countdown areas, facilitating law enforcement, and ensuring a secure New Year's Eve. Moreover, effective police deployment led to a swift Walk of Thanksgiving for the Black Nazarene, kicking off the Nazarene 2024 activities.

All throughout the Yuletide Season and welcoming 2024, Nartatez highlighted the collective commitment of all sectors to maintaining peace and order in all communities. (NCRPO / PIA-NCR)
