Zambo City athletes shine in Batang Pinoy, Philippine National Games

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PIA) -- Zamboangueño athletes secured the 7th position in the overall rankings of the Batang Pinoy Games and the Philippine National Games (PNG), marking an impressive ascent of eight (8) places from their 15th-place finish in 2022 to the 7th-place spot in 2023.

The city reaped a total of 32 gold, 22 silver, and 23 bronze medals in the Batang Pinoy Games and 14 gold, 13 silver, and 13 bronze medals in the PNG.

The Batang Pinoy is for athletes aged 17 and below while the PNG is open to athletes aged 18 and above. It was organized by the Philippine Sports Commission, held from December 17 to 22, 2023.

It can be recalled that Mayor John Dalipe joined the Zamboanga delegation during the opening program of the said games at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila, as a show of his commitment to sports and youth development.

The mayor flew to Manila in time for the program organized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and to show full support to the 300-strong Zamboanga City delegation led by City Sports Director Dr. Cecil Atilano and Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) Executive Director Prof. Elbert Atilano Sr. together with the coaches and other officials.

The City Government financially supports the delegates and their participation in the simultaneous staging of the Batang Pinoy and the PNG. The support includes the provision of uniforms, shoes, food, and fare for the delegation

A total of 25 sports, namely: archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, basketball 3x3, boxing, chess, cycling, dancesport, football, gymnastics, judo, karatedo, kickboxing, lawn tennis, muay thai, pencak silat, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, beach volleyball, wrestling, weightlifting, and wushu, were included in the simultaneous games.
